Rarotonga Cook Islands - Airport Topographic Survey

MACRO Consulting Surveyors recently undertook a large topographic survey of the Rarotonga Airport, Cook Islands. Utilising Total Stations, GNSS Base / Rover, mobile LiDAR and DJI M300 RTK drone LiDAR / Orthomosaic. Big thankyou to Cook Island Chief Surveyor Pureau Manuela at the Ministry of Justice, all the Raro Airport crew, our Chief Toto!, the team at Nextcore lidar, Surveyor Rick McElligott, the night Roosters and all MACRO Staff back home for making this job come together between unseasonal rain scuds and a hectic 24hr airport schedule.

On November 28 ^th , Advanced Mathematics students from grade 9, 10 and 11 at Norfolk Island Central School became honorary surveyors for a day.

Norfolk Island was the site of the latest Maths in Surveying Day, an engaging, challenging event that puts maths students through their paces with a number of activities that show off the mathematic aspects of surveying.

Nsw Government Announces Fast-Tracked Planning System

Australia Has Moved About 1.8 Metres!

Users of Mapping Grid of Australia (MGA) coordinates need to be aware that Geoscience Australia has adopted a new origin of coordinates as of 1st January 2020 as the continent of Australia is moving north easterly at a rate of about 7 centimeters per year.

The new origin of coordinates (datum) is known as Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020), and the prior datum is known as GDA1994.

What this means is that any design project or survey plans based on the earlier GDA1994 datum will not agree with MGA coordinates derived from systems which have MGA coordinates based on GDA2020 by about 1.8 metres.

The critical thing is you must know what geocentric datum your projects coordinate system is based on, otherwise a significant error may be introduced.
